How can a cemetery be home to both somber remembrance and quiet reflection? Here at Waikumete Cemetery Holocaust Memorial, history whispers from the stones. This is New Zealand’s largest cemetery. It sprawls across 108 hectares in Glen Eden.

Waikumete Cemetery was established in 1886. It is the final resting place for over 70000 people. The proximity to the Glen Eden railway station influenced its location. Special train services once brought passengers and their loved ones here.

The Chapel of Faith in the Oaks stands as a testament to time. It was built in 1886. It served as a mortuary chapel. A larger chapel replaced it in 1952.

Waikumete is home to several prominent memorials. Among them are the Erebus Memorial, the Holocaust Memorial, the NZ Influenza Epidemic memorial and the ANZAC Cenotaph. The Holocaust Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of a dark chapter in human history. It offers a place for contemplation and remembrance.

Two extensive areas within Waikumete Cemetery were set aside for service personnel. These areas are for those who served in the World Wars and for post-war veterans. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains the graves of 285 Commonwealth service personnel. 110 are from World War I. 176 are from World War II.

The Auckland Provincial Memorial stands at the entrance. It commemorates 56 service personnel from the Auckland Province. They died serving in and around New Zealand during both World Wars. They have no known grave.

The Commission also commemorates 44 World War II service personnel. These individuals were cremated at Waikumete Crematorium. In 1999 a memorial was erected. It honors seven personnel whose ashes were stored in the chapel building. It now rests on their final resting place in the chapel lawn.

Waikumete Cemetery is more than just a burial ground. It is a place of remembrance. It is a chronicle of Auckland’s history. It is a place of reflection and respect. Here we remember lives lived. We honor sacrifices made. We contemplate the past.
