Founded in 1904 the Waikīkī Aquarium is the second oldest aquarium in the United States. Since 1919 it has been administered by the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Its mission is simple inspire promote understanding appreciation and conservation of Pacific marine life. Each year over 320000 visitors pass through these doors. They come face-to-face with over 500 marine species and more than 3500 marine specimens.
Here at the Waikīkī Aquarium exhibits focus on the unique aquatic life of Hawai’i and the tropical Pacific. You will see everything from vibrant coral reef habitats to the open ocean.
Let’s talk about some highlights. Corals are alive. Interactive exhibits showcase coral biology and their importance to conservation. The Sea Visions Theatre shows videos about shoreline conservation. It also teaches how to be a responsible reef visitor. Our South Pacific Marine Communities exhibit features colorful reef corals. Giant clams groupers and snappers also call it home. Hawaiian Marine Communities recreate habitats from wave-swept shores to deep reef slopes. You’ll discover distinctive reef life like the longnose butterflyfish.
Don’t miss the Ocean Drifters Gallery. A 1000-gallon moon jelly tank awaits you. The Hunters on the Reef exhibit features Hawaiian sharks and jacks. Shark interpretive panels share their biology research and conservation needs. The Edge of the Reef exhibit offers hands-on interactions with selected marine life. The Coral Farm is a working research facility for reef coral propagation. The Giant Clams exhibit displays these amazing creatures.
The Waikīkī Aquarium also supports endangered species. The Hawaiian Monk Seal Habitat is a must-see. The aquarium conducts research on husbandry nutrition and the behavior of marine life.
