Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s New City community, Wagner Park is a vibrant green oasis. The park’s history is as rich and varied as the community it serves. Wagner Park is named after Clarence P. Wagner, a prominent 14th Ward Alderman who sadly died in 1953. It sits on two non-contiguous properties located along 51st Street. In the beginning, the park was envisioned as a simple lawn with walkways and plantings on the eastern parcel. The western parcel was designed to include a playground, volleyball courts, and a shelter house. The City of Chicago purchased land for the park in 1949, and by 1953, the city owned two lots. The City eventually transferred ownership of Wagner Park, along with over 200 other properties, to the Chicago Park District in 1957. Today, the park remains incomplete, existing as two separate parcels separated by private property. Take a moment to appreciate the park’s unique layout. Despite its fragmentation, the park flourishes, offering a playground and water feature for families to enjoy. If you are looking for structured programming, head over to nearby Fuller Park. But, Wagner Park is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the community it serves, a place where kids can play and families can gather, honouring the legacy of Clarence P. Wagner.
