Why is that colorful, twisted sculpture called “Wachstum,” which means “growth,” you ask? Here in front of the Heimstätten GmbH building on Mönkhofer Weg stands the Wachstum Sculpture. This steel sculpture, coated in vibrant colors, was crafted in 1975 by the artist Gerhard Backschat. The name “Wachstum” alludes to the intended symbolism of the artwork. Backschat aimed to represent the concepts of growth, progress, and the upward trajectory of society through the sculpture’s dynamic form. The intertwining lines and ascending structure evoke a sense of development and expansion. The use of bright, eye-catching colors injects a sense of optimism and vibrancy into the piece, further emphasizing the positive connotations of growth.
