Whispers of leather and polished wood echo. This is the Pferdekutschenmuseum. It is a hidden gem in Lubeck. This museum is not just about carriages. It is about a bygone era.
The Pferdekutschenmuseum awaits at Wakenitzmauer 32. Christian Wesnigk’s private collection resides here. He is the heart and soul of this unique place.
Inside, a world of horse-drawn vehicles unfolds. There are 56 Pferdewagen. They date from 1850 to 1920. Most are from Lubeck and its surroundings. Imagine the clip-clop of hooves. Think of the rumble of wheels on cobblestone streets.
The collection extends beyond carriages. Reisezubehor or travel accessories are on display. There is a Sattelkammer. A Schmiede or smithy evokes the craftsmanship of the time. Pictures capture moments from the past.
Christian Wesnigk is the Custos. He opens his Kutschensammlung for tours. One such tour was part of the Filmklatsch event. It was held by Thomas Hailer and C. Cay Wesnigk in July 2023. The tour lasted about 1.5 hours. It could accommodate up to 14 people.
The tour provides a glimpse into his film archive. It contains historical film and video equipment. The Vortragsraum or lecture room is on the 2nd floor. It can accommodate up to 25 people.
Finding the Pferdekutschenmuseum is part of the adventure. It lies on the island between Burgtor and Rosenpforte. Look for the white and brown striped door. A large museum sign juts out into the street. It is about 3 meters high.
Parking is available near the Hubbrucke on KanalstraBe. One can stroll across the Hubbrucke. Then take the stairs up to the museum.
The Pferdekutschenmuseum is more than a collection. It is a journey. It transports you to a time of elegance and horsepower. It is a testament to Lubeck’s rich history.
