Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Saxony, the Gemeinde Wachau awaits. Wachau first appeared in historical records in 1218 as “Wachowe,” a name derived from the old Sorbian word for “Vach’s place.” This charming municipality, located just 25 kilometers from Dresden, isn’t just a single village, but a collection of five distinct Ortsteile: Feldschlößchen, Leppersdorf, Lomnitz, Seifersdorf, and Wachau itself. While comprised of five Ortsteile, Wachau is structured into four Ortschaften, mirroring the four original independent communities. The Ortsteile of Feldschlößchen and Wachau together form a single Ortschaft. Wachau stands at an elevation of 223 meters above sea level, covering an area of 38.11 square kilometers. As of December 31, 2023, Wachau’s population was recorded at 4,248, giving it a population density of 111 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Wachau’s history is etched into its very landscape. The village is situated near the Alte Salz- oder Glasstraße, an ancient trade route connecting Schluckenau in Bohemia to Leipzig and Halle. Imagine the merchants and travelers who once traversed this path, their wagons laden with goods, passing through the gentle slopes where Wachau now lies. The village itself is nestled in a valley, surrounded by the Timmelsberg, Orlberg, and Steinberg, creating a picturesque setting on the western edge of the Westlausitz protected landscape area.

At the heart of Wachau lies its Baroque Schloss, an elegant palace built on an artificial island. Constructed between 1730 and 1754, the Schloss was commissioned by the widowed Countess Magdalena Sophie von Schönfeld for her son. Over the years, the Schloss has changed hands numerous times, serving as a testament to the passage of time and the shifting tides of history. In 2019, the Schloss Wachau embarked on a new chapter when it was sold to a private investor. The Schloss is now undergoing meticulous renovations.

Just a short distance from the Schloss, the Wachauer Kirche stands as a beacon of faith and artistry. Inside, the church walls are adorned with captivating murals by Erhard Ludewig Winterstein, a renowned painter and teacher at the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts. These vibrant paintings breathe life into the church, adding another layer of beauty to Wachau’s rich tapestry. As you explore Wachau, take a moment to appreciate the stories whispered by the wind as it rustles through the trees surrounding the village. In the spring, the air is filled with the sweet fragrance of blossoms, a reminder of the renewal and vitality of nature. In autumn, the leaves transform into a fiery tapestry of colors, creating a spectacle of beauty before winter’s embrace. Wachau is more than just a village; it’s a place where history, nature, and art intertwine.
