Across the bustling cityscape, the Vuelo Eterno Sculpture beckons. The Vuelo Eterno Sculpture, also known as “Wings of Mexico,” is more than just a captivating art piece. It’s a symbol of dreams, aspirations, and the human desire to transcend limitations. Created by Jorge Marin in 2010, the Vuelo Eterno Sculpture first graced Mexico City as part of a larger exhibition along Reforma Avenue. The response was overwhelming, exceeding all expectations and transforming the sculpture into a beloved landmark. The artwork resonated with people from diverse backgrounds, inviting them to imagine the possibility of soaring freely, propelled by passion and belief. The image of wings has a deep-rooted significance in human culture, appearing in art, mythology, and folklore across millennia. Marin tapped into this universal symbolism, creating a work that speaks to the shared human yearning for flight and freedom. The Vuelo Eterno Sculpture became so popular that a book, “Wings of the City,” was published, showcasing its impact. Featuring photographs by Jorge Lepes and Adam Weissman, with a preface by renowned Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes, the book received the Best Art Book Award at the 32nd National Graphic Arts Festival in 2012. Marin’s vision extended beyond a single installation. He conceived the idea of donating bronze replicas of the Vuelo Eterno Sculpture to major cities worldwide, envisioning them as permanent public installations. Tel Aviv, Israel, became the first recipient in 2012, followed by Berlin, Germany, in 2013. The sculpture is made of bronze, with a cement and iron base designed to match the average human height. It depicts a pair of wings, inviting viewers to step in and become part of the artwork, capturing a photo of themselves seemingly taking flight. After its initial three-year exhibition on Reforma Avenue, the Vuelo Eterno Sculpture was officially donated to Mexico City in June 2014, solidifying its status as a cherished symbol of the city’s spirit. The Vuelo Eterno Sculpture stands as a testament to the power of art to inspire and connect us, reminding us of the boundless potential within each of us to reach for the sky.
