Here stands Budapest Déli station a place of arrivals and departures. Imagine the stories echoing through its platforms. Budapest Déli station known as the Déli to locals is more than just a transport hub. It’s a witness to Budapest’s tumultuous history.

Let’s step back to 1861. The station first opened connecting Budapest to Rijeka. Rijeka was then known as Fiume. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This linked Budapest to the Adriatic Sea.

Fast forward to World War II. Significant damage occurred here. The modern facade you see now wasn’t completed until 1975. Budapest Déli is the only major rail terminal in Budapest with a modern building. It has a Communist-era concrete structure. Some might even call the tarpaulins covering its facade an improvement.

Budapest Déli is located in the 1st district. This is in Buda. It primarily serves towns and cities in Transdanubia. The station is a major transport hub. Trams and buses connect it to other districts. The M2 metro line also has a terminus here since 1972.

The station has five island platforms and two side platforms. There are twelve tracks in total. All tracks terminate here. No trains pass straight through Déli station.

If you are arriving at Budapest Déli. You might be heading to Lake Balaton. Or perhaps you’re catching an international train to Ljubljana or Zagreb. Regiojet trains also run to Vienna and Prague from here.

Navigating Budapest Déli is straightforward. The lower level connects to the street. Here, you’ll find taxis and the metro entrance. Stairs lead to the upper level. The upper level houses the concourse platforms and ticket hall.

Platforms are mostly exposed to the elements. The concourse is a covered area open at the sides. You can find the main departure board ticket machines and food outlets here.

No need to worry about ticket gates. There is free access to the platforms. Level access exists between the concourse and platforms. But remember there are steps from the street. If you want to avoid those steps. Walk to the west side of the station. Alkotas utca is on the same level.

Two ticket offices are available domestic and international. They are at opposite ends of the vast hall. The international ticket office has limited hours. The domestic office is open all day.

Need to store your luggage? There are lockers in the ticket hall. ATMs are also available inside the station. But there is no first-class lounge here. Head to Keleti for that.

Feeling hungry? Cafes and food outlets are available in the station. For a unique experience try Vagon Etterem. It is across the road from the station. You can eat in an old railway dining car.

Getting around Budapest from Déli is easy. The M2 metro line is accessible here. Trams and buses are also available. Taxis wait outside the station. Seniors over 65 travel for free on Budapest public transit. Consider downloading the BudapestGo app for easy ticket purchases.

Budapest Déli may lack the grandeur of Keleti or Nyugati. Yet its history and functionality make it a vital part of Budapest. It connects the city to various destinations. Its modern facade tells a story of resilience. As you stand here think of the journeys that begin and end at Budapest Déli station.
