Beneath our feet, the earth holds secrets of fire and fury. We are standing before Volcán Las Pilas. This complex volcano in western Nicaragua is part of a 30-kilometer-long volcanic massif.
Las Pilas has a series of well-preserved flank vents. They surround a central cone. Imagine the earth rumbling. Picture the sky ablaze with ash and smoke during its eruptions.
Volcán Las Pilas is also known as El Hoyo. This translates to “The Hole”. This name hints at the dramatic geological features it possesses. Its highest point reaches 1,088 meters above sea level.
The last eruption of Las Pilas occurred in the 1950s. Before that, there was possibly an eruption in the 16th century. The volcano has been built from activity in numerous craters. The most recent crater is on the southern side. It measures 700 meters wide and 120 meters deep.
Look closely at the slopes near the peak. Do you see that circular sinkhole? It has a 100-meter diameter. This curious feature was visible in a 1944 aerial photo in National Geographic. It is still present today.
In 1994, specialists investigated a dense white plume rising from the volcano. The plume smelled strongly of sulfur. It emerged from a small crater. The crater was about 10 meters in diameter and 5 to 10 meters deep.
The specialists also examined a larger phreatic pit crater. It measured 30 to 40 meters in diameter and about 30 meters deep. The explosion that created this crater must have been powerful. It disrupted several basaltic lava flows.
Las Pilas overlooks the Cerro Negro volcano to the northwest. The volcanic complex includes a diverse group of cones. These cones surround the central vent of Las Pilas or El Hoyo. A north-south fracture system marks many well-preserved lateral vents.
The rocks in this area are andesitic basaltic and dacitic. The water-filled Asososca maar lies beside the Cerro Asososca cone. It is on the southern side of the fissure system.
Las Pilas stands as a testament to Nicaragua’s dynamic geological landscape. Its history of eruptions and unique features tells a powerful story. It reminds us of the earth’s raw power. It shows its constant state of change.
