Why did Bishop Santiago Abarca feel the need to rebuild the facade of San Juan Bautista in the mid-1800s? We stand before San Juan Bautista Church in the heart of León’s vibrant San Juan neighborhood. This church, sometimes called San Juan Apóstol, whispers tales of resilience and rebirth. Originally constructed between 1625 and 1650, San Juan Bautista has seen its share of transformations. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of León. The San Juan neighborhood, along with the Laborío neighborhood, were once settlements of indigenous people known as Naboríos or Laboríos. Each neighborhood developed around its own church and plaza, and like other settlements, they had Cabildo buildings for governance. The original San Juan Bautista Church served as the heart of the San Juan neighborhood. It was later reconstructed in the 18th century. Its most recent makeover occurred between 1850 and 1860 under the watchful eye of Bishop Santiago Abarca. He redesigned the main facade and the south tower, shaping the church we see today. The church’s architecture is a captivating blend of styles. A square-based bell tower stands proudly alongside the south facade. The main facade is divided into two decreasing sections. Its decorative elements are simple yet elegant: attached columns and pillars. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a serene white interior. Delicate ceiling paintings and gilded adornments catch the eye. Several glass cases display statues of saints. A noteworthy feature is the ogee arch between the presbytery and the main body. It hints at an ancient influence. A magnificent wooden pulpit adds to the church’s charm. San Juan Bautista reflects the rich tapestry of León’s past. It also shows its vibrant cultural heart.
