Could a single missing ballot change the course of an election? Here in Vitry-sur-Seine-2, that very question became reality. Vitry-sur-Seine-2 isn’t a building or a monument, but a canton, a political district carved from the larger city of Vitry-sur-Seine. It’s a place defined not by walls, but by the lives and votes of its nearly 47,000 inhabitants. Created in 2015, Vitry-sur-Seine-2 is a relatively young canton. It elects two departmental councilors to represent its interests. The 2015 elections saw Evelyne Rabardel and Hocine Tmimi, representing the Left Front, win against the National Front candidates in the second round. Fast forward to June 2021. The elections were marked by an extremely low turnout. Again, Evelyne Rabardel and Hocine Tmimi seemed poised to win. However, a third pair, the ecologists, came in a surprisingly close third, just one vote behind the second-place finishers. They immediately challenged the results. Why? Because in one polling station, their ballots were missing for over seven hours. This seemingly small detail led to the annulment of the election by the administrative court. They ruled that the missing ballots had indeed impacted the sincerity of the vote. New elections were held alongside the 2022 legislative elections. This time, with their competitor’s list withdrawn, Rabardel and Tmimi were the only candidates on the ballot. They were elected with all the expressed votes, concluding a tumultuous chapter in Vitry-sur-Seine-2’s short electoral history.
