Behold the Vitale Liegende. This isn’t just any sculpture. It’s a powerful statement in Corten steel. Created in 1994 by Franz Bernhard it stands near the Agentur fur Arbeit in Lubeck.

The Vitale Liegende is monumental yet surprisingly light and agile. Only a small part touches the ground. The rest seems to float defying gravity. Its gentle twist and asymmetrical shape enhance this impression of movement. Your eye follows its edges upwards towards the sky.

The sculpture’s simplicity is captivating. It’s composed of two distinct forms. One long and slender the other broad and flat. The plates of rust-colored Corten steel are clearly visible. You can see the weld lines. This is the work of a skilled engineer following the principles of technical construction.

Despite its lack of human resemblance the sculpture evokes humanity’s restless energy. It mirrors our constant striving our ambition to shape the world around us. It depicts not a person but human behavior itself. It’s a silent testament to our striving.

Franz Bernhard the artist had a remarkable life. Born in 1934 in Bohemia he moved to South Germany in 1946. He studied at the Karlsruhe Art Academy under renowned artists. He worked in Jockgrim and led the Baden-Wurttemberg Artists’ Association. He exhibited extensively won prestigious awards including the Villa Romana and Villa Massimo prizes. His work graces public spaces in many cities. He created his powerful forms mostly in wood and Corten steel. He died in 2013.

This artwork is a tribute to his talent. The Vitale Liegende is a masterpiece. It’s an embodiment of human drive and potential. The way the metal seems to defy gravity is an impressive sight. Feel the power of this sculpture. Let it speak to your soul.
