Listen closely. The St.-Martin-Kirche in Lubeck whispers a story of community and resilience. Its octagonal shape is a testament to its unique past.

This isn’t just any church. The St.-Martin-Kirche is a vital part of the St. Juergen parish. It stands in Lubeck not far from the Kastanienallee. This church wasn’t always independent. Until the mid-20th century Lubeck’s St. Juergen district belonged to the Lubeck Cathedral’s parish.

But Lubeck was growing. The Cathedral and its priests were overwhelmed. In 1956 the Cathedral’s church council pushed for a new pastoral district. They needed a new pastor. This was desperately needed for the St. Juergen chapel.

Money was tight. The community rallied. Residents around the St. Martin church site pitched in. They collected donations. They called it the “Martinsgroschen”. These funds helped bring architect Heinz Bahr’s design to life.

On September 9 1961 the foundation stone was laid. It was described as “The Tent of God among Men”. Under Pastor Ruhberg the church became independent in 1962. The St.-Martin-Kirche isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of collective effort.

Today the St.-Martin-Kirche still thrives. Its choir unites voices. It hosts numerous groups including the Martin Gospel Singers and the Vokal Kolleg. Even a children’s group meets here. The church’s story is ongoing. It continues to serve its community and reflect its spirit. The St.-Martin-Kirche stands as a reminder of how a community can build something truly special. It showcases the faith and strength that built a church from humble beginnings.
