Wouldn’t you agree that Rio de Janeiro is known as the “Cidade Maravilhosa” for good reason? This is thanks to its exuberant geography. Few cities in the world enjoy such a beautiful geographical location. Here at Vista para a cidade, we are about to enjoy a visual treat that is the city of Rio.

Rio offers many amazing views. A trip to Rio can be synonymous with only beach and party. But it would be a pity to miss the opportunity to enjoy this visual candy. That is why we are here at Vista para a cidade.

Let’s talk about some of Rio’s best viewpoints. Consider the Arpoador Rock. It is in the wealthy South Zone. Ipanema has a high concentration of cafes restaurants theaters and shops. Its beach is one of Rio’s most iconic. One of Ipanema’s best views is from Arpoador Rock. It sits on a small peninsula at the east end of the neighborhood. It is just before Copacabana. From here you can see the entire length of Ipanema Beach. The Dos Irmaos hills provide a stunning backdrop. They offer one of the city’s most impressive views.

Getting to Ipanema is easy. It is in the South Zone. Access is easy by foot bicycle bus Uber taxi or metro. The closest metro station to Arpoador Rock is General Osorio. Sunsets are especially beautiful. They attract many people. Sunrise is also a good time. You can see the Dos Irmaos facing the sun. Since you are in Ipanema take the chance to enjoy the beach. Also take in the iconic view of locals enjoying the beach. Be careful not to leave valuables unattended while swimming.

Another option is Parque da Lagoa. It is only seven blocks from Ipanema Beach. The Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon is bordered by parks and bike paths. Parque da Lagoa is east of the lake. It offers a nice spot for a picnic. It is great for admiring the sunset. Locals highly appreciate this spot. Access is easy by foot bicycle bus Uber taxi or metro. The closest metro stations are General Osorio and Cantagalo. Visit at sunset.

Consider the Leme Fort. It sits on a hill above Leme. This neighborhood is next to Copacabana at the northeast end of the beach. The fort offers prime views of Copacabana. Entry times are limited. You must pass through a military barracks to ascend. Access is easy by foot bicycle bus Uber taxi or metro. The closest metro station is Cardeal Arcoverde. Go as early as possible. This avoids backlighting the view of Copacabana. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Entry costs 4 Reais.

Below Leme Fort at the end of the beach is a wall. It is called Mureta de Leme. A path runs over the rocks. It gives a spectacular view of the beach. You can watch people fishing and surfing up close. Access is easy by foot bicycle bus Uber taxi or metro. The closest metro station is Cardeal Arcoverde. Visit at sunrise. You can watch the fishermen and surfers.

The Mirador Chino also known as Vista Chinesa is in Tijuca National Park. This viewpoint resembles a Chinese pagoda. It arguably offers the city’s most stunning sunrise. From the Botanical Garden you can walk there. Take Rua Pacheco Leal uphill. It takes 1 hour 40 minutes. Returning is faster downhill. You can cycle. I once did at noon on a public bicycle. Some uphill sections are quite challenging. The best way to arrive for sunrise is by Uber. Leaving at 5 AM will still be dark. To return you can walk. Or you can hitch a ride with others in cars. I have done that. It is free.
