When it was built in 1963, it replaced several smaller schools, including Brandstrup Skole, which was literally out in the countryside! The designers wanted to give the children of Hjortshøj a connection to nature. They envisioned a space where learning could spill out into the open air. Virupskolen today is a bustling hub with around 600 students and 85 staff. And yes, it still enjoys that close bond with nature. Students have football fields, a multi-purpose sports area, and even a “bålhytte” – a traditional Danish shelter with a fireplace – all within easy reach.
