Have you ever glimpsed a hidden jewel nestled within a national park? Welcome to Stubbe Sø. This largest lake on the Djursland peninsula lies peacefully within the breathtaking Mols Bjerge National Park. It wasn’t always a lake though. Stubbe Sø was once a fjord. The land rose around it transforming this ancient waterway into the tranquil lake we see today.
Imagine the history held within its waters. Long ago. Stone Age settlements dotted the coastlines where Stubbe Sø met the sea. Think of the lives lived. The stories whispered on the wind as the lake transformed. Now imagine looking out from the bird tower.
The bird tower at Stubbe Sø offers magnificent views. It is a perfect vantage point for bird watchers. Many species thrive in this pristine environment. Look closely. You might see the majestic sea eagle soaring high above. Otters play in the reeds. Greylag geese glide across the surface. Divers and water rails dart through the water. The lake’s clear waters are teeming with life. Nutritious sand and surrounding forests keep this water clean.
Stubbe Sø is a haven for wildlife. It is not just a beautiful place. This place has enormous ecological importance. It’s a crucial resting place for migratory birds. Ornithologists from around the world come here to study the birds that visit. The lake itself is remarkably rich. There are abundant aquatic plants and fish.
Access to Stubbe Sø might be tricky. Much of the surrounding land is privately owned. But the state owns a section at the southeastern edge. From there a footpath leads to the lake. The road to the bird tower follows Stubbe Søvej. Look for the sign just east of Stubbe Bridge. Then a short walk from the parking lot points you to the bird tower. The walk is short. It only takes about 100 meters. An arrow shows you the way.
But there’s more to the story. Around the turn of the millennium a biomanipulation project aimed to improve water clarity. They removed tons of fish hoping to boost the populations of algae-eating creatures. Unfortunately the plan didn’t work entirely. The water remains occasionally green with algae. Experts say the project needed a finishing touch. Raising the water level slightly would help. This would create crucial shallow breeding grounds for fish like pike. Nature has its own cycles. Stubbe Sø will hopefully return to its original crystal clear self.
So let us appreciate this unique ecosystem. Let us revel in its beauty. Let us remember the layers of history. Stubbe Sø is a place where nature and history intertwine. This is Stubbe Sø. A place of wonder and beauty waiting to be explored.
