Does the name Jorge Newbery ring a bell. Here at Virgen de la Plaza Jorge Newbery we honor a remarkable man. He excelled as an aviator, engineer, sportsman and scientist.

Jorge Newbery’s life unfolded during a transformative era for Argentina. Immigrants flocked here. The economy boomed. Argentina’s global influence grew. Newbery embodied this era’s optimism.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1875, Newbery’s father was an American dentist. At eight years old, Jorge journeyed to the United States. He later studied engineering at Cornell University. He graduated from Drexel Institute. There he learned from Thomas Edison.

Returning to Argentina, Newbery led the Rio de la Plata Light and Traction Company. He joined the Argentine Navy as an electrical engineer during border disputes with Chile. He also taught swimming at the Naval School. He modernized Buenos Aires’s lighting as Director General of Electrical Installations.

Newbery’s passion for flight ignited after meeting Alberto Santos-Dumont. In 1907, Newbery and Aarón Anchorena crossed the Río de la Plata in the balloon El Pampero. This feat captured the public’s imagination. The Aero Club Argentino formed soon after. Newbery became its president.

Tragedy struck when his brother Eduardo vanished during a balloon flight. Yet, Newbery persevered. He championed aerostatics. He even wrote Argentina’s first aviation article. He acquired the balloon El Huracán. It set South American records for distance and duration. The Club Atlético Huracán football club adopted the balloon’s name.

In 1910, Newbery earned his pilot’s license. He dedicated himself to aviation. He helped establish the Military Aviation School. This was Latin America’s first air force. In 1912, he crossed the Río de la Plata in a monoplane.

In 1914, Newbery broke the world altitude record. He reached 6225 meters. Sadly, the international commission did not ratify it. Regulations required a greater margin over the previous record.

That same year, Newbery died in a plane crash in Mendoza. He was only 38. He was preparing to cross the Andes by aircraft. His death cemented his status as an Argentine idol.

Beyond aviation, Newbery excelled in boxing, swimming, and fencing. He supported municipal control of Buenos Aires’s lighting services. He researched transportation solutions for the city. He even wrote about graphite and petroleum industries.

Jorge Newbery was more than an aviator. He was a symbol of courage. He was a pioneer. His legacy lives on in Argentina’s spirit of innovation. The Aeroparque Jorge Newbery airport bears his name. Countless streets, schools, and clubs honor him. His story echoes. It inspires generations to reach for the sky.
