Tania was just a baby when she unknowingly accepted a medal for her mother’s incredible bravery. We are standing before the Violette Szabo Blue plaque, a tribute to a true heroine of World War II. Violette Szabo, a name synonymous with courage and sacrifice, once called this unassuming house at 18 Burnley Road her home. Born in Paris to a French mother and English father, Violette’s life was far from ordinary. She became a skilled secret agent for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), undertaking perilous missions in Nazi-occupied France. The plaque inscription, “She gave her life for the French Resistance,” speaks volumes about Violette’s unwavering dedication. She was captured on her second mission into France and, despite enduring months of brutal interrogation and torture, she refused to break. Tragically, Violette Szabo was executed at the Ravensbrück concentration camp in 1945. Her story, however, didn’t end there. Posthumously awarded the George Cross, Britain’s highest civilian honor for gallantry, her legacy lived on. The award was presented to her young daughter, Tania, in 1946, a poignant symbol of a mother’s extraordinary bravery and sacrifice.
