Peeking through the reeds, what secrets does Vindemose hold? This isn’t just a body of water. This is Vindemose. The name Vindemose might not scream history. Yet Denmark’s story is deeply entwined with its relationship to wind power.
Denmark embraced wind power in the 1970s. Global warming concerns rose in the 1980s. Denmark wanted to cut carbon emissions. Renewable energy became the clear path forward. It reduced reliance on other countries for energy. It also curbed pollution.
One key piece of Danish wind power history is the development of wind turbine cooperatives. These cooperatives empowered families to invest in wind energy. They received tax exemptions for generating electricity. By 1996, about 2100 cooperatives existed. These initiatives boosted the popularity of wind turbines. Around 86% of Danes supported wind energy. They liked it more than existing fuel sources.
The Middelgrunden offshore wind farm stands out. It had 20 turbines. It was the world’s largest offshore farm when built in 2000. The Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Cooperative owned 50% of it. This cooperative had 10000 investors.
Offshore wind farms are a big deal for Denmark. They use areas of sea with shallow water. The wind speeds are higher there. They can reach roughly 8.5 to 9.0 m/s at 50 m height.
Denmark continues to set new production records. On July 9, 2015, wind farms produced 116% of the nation’s electricity. At 3 am the next morning, wind production exceeded 140% of demand. In 2020, wind power created 56% of Denmark’s total electricity. This exceeded the 20% in 2010. It also beat the 11% in 2000. The government wants 100% renewable power generation by 2030.
Denmark has the second highest wind power generation capacity per capita. Only Sweden is ahead. Danish manufacturers like Vestas are world leaders. Vestas is the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer.
As you gaze at Vindemose, remember the story of wind power in Denmark. It’s a tale of innovation, community, and commitment to a greener future. It is a commitment still blowing strong today.
