Imagine physicists from across Europe. They gather here at the Niels Bohr Institute to discuss new theories. This institute is a hub for scientific innovation. It stands as a testament to groundbreaking discoveries.

The Niels Bohr Institute was founded in 1921. Niels Bohr established it as the Institute for Theoretical Physics. He had been lobbying for its creation since 1916. The Carlsberg brewery and the Rockefeller Foundation provided much of the funding.

In 1965, it officially became the Niels Bohr Institute. This was on the 80th anniversary of Niels Bohr’s birth. During the 1920s and 1930s, it was a central place for atomic and quantum physics. The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics originated here.

After Niels Bohr’s death in 1962, Aage Bohr became the director. He held this position until 1970. He remained active at the institute until 1992.

In 1993, the institute merged with other institutions. These were the Astronomic Observatory, the Ørsted Laboratory, and the Geophysical Institute. The merged entity retained the name Niels Bohr Institute.

Research at the Niels Bohr Institute spans many fields. These include astronomy, geophysics, nanophysics, and particle physics. Quantum physics and biophysics are also key areas. Researchers use observations, experiments, and models. They seek to understand basic laws and complex truths. The institute has a broad network. It has collaborations with leading international research groups.

Astrophysicists study everything from planets to dark matter here. They participate in international projects. They access telescopes and supercomputers through collaborations.

Biocomplexity research combines physics and biology. It explores complex phenomena in living systems. Physicists, biologists, and medical doctors collaborate. They study systems from proteins to large-scale structures.

Condensed matter physics focuses on solids and liquids. It underlies many everyday technologies. Research explores quantum phenomena near absolute zero.

Experimental particle physicists explore the universe’s origins. They seek to understand the smallest components of matter. They study the forces that held them together after the Big Bang.

The Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth section studies the Earth’s elements. They examine the interactions between the atmosphere, oceans, and ice sheets.

Quantum Optics research focuses on quantum information processing. It also explores quantum sensors and technologies. Researchers manipulate photons interacting with quantum matter.

Theoretical high energy physics research centers around quantum theories. It also includes gravity and astrophysics. Research areas include black holes, cosmology, and quantum gravity.

The Cosmic Dawn Center is a collaboration with the Danish Technical University. It investigates the period when the first stars and galaxies formed. Researchers use telescopes like ALMA and the James Webb Space Telescope.

The Niels Bohr Institute awards the Medal of Honour. It recognizes outstanding researchers. They must work in the spirit of international cooperation and knowledge exchange.

The medal features a portrait of Niels Bohr and an atom symbol. The back includes a quote from Bohr about language and communication. It also includes the phrase “Unity of Knowledge”.

The Niels Bohr Institute has a rich history of scientific discovery. It continues to be a leading research institution.
