Have you noticed the striking contrast between this island and the capital? We are now on Villingili. This tranquil island offers a serene escape from Malé’s hectic pace. Villingili is also known as Villimalé. It’s a world away from the bustling city.

Villingili is located just a short ferry ride west of Malé. It is the fifth district of Malé City. The ferry operates 24 hours a day. Imagine stepping off the ferry and feeling the gentle sea breeze. Palm trees line the shore. The island is small enough to explore on foot or by bicycle.

Historically, Villingili faced a tough time. Malabar pirates often looted and burned it. They were frustrated by Malé’s defenses. In 1961, residents were resettled to Hulhulé. This freed up agricultural land near Malé. A prison was built here in 1962. Later, in 1973, a resort opened.

Before becoming residential, Villingili was a resort. It was the second resort in the Maldives. The first, Kurumba, was overbooked. Between 2010 and 2016, there was a drug rehabilitation center. It was near the public beach.

Today, Villingili attracts many local visitors. It is a popular weekend destination. Residents from Malé and Hulhumalé love to visit. Several hotels and guesthouses also attract foreign tourists.

Villingili promotes eco-consciousness. The local islanders and NGOs ensure sustainability. You can take a four-hour eco walking tour. Learn about the island’s history and culture. Meet a representative from Save the Beach NGO. They will explain Villingili’s sensitive ecology. The island is small. It only takes an hour to walk around Villingili.

There are only two beaches in Villingili. Both are public. Remember to dress modestly. Bikinis are not allowed here. Villingili Public Beach has shimmering sands and clear water. The water is shallow and safe for toddlers. There are no changing rooms. You will see many locals here. You can watch crabs on the sand or take pictures. You can even snorkel to explore the house reef.

The Garden Breeze Café is an open-air café at the public beach. You can enjoy a Maldivian breakfast or coffee. You can see Malé in the distance from here.

Don’t miss the chance to taste hedika. These are traditional Maldivian snacks. They are deep-fried and eaten at tea time. Cafés serve these snacks with kalu sai black tea.

You can also participate in coral planting. Help revive Maldives’ marine biodiversity. Save the Beach NGO can explain how it works. You will plant healthy coral on an artificial grid. This improves the reef quality.

Villingili has mosques you can explore. Masjid Al-Salaam is a seaside mosque. Masjid Al-Ikhlaas has an Islamic-style minaret. Masjid Al-Birri is another option.

For water sports, visit Villingili Water Sports Area. There are dive centers and rental shops. You can try flyboarding at Liquid Water Sports Center.

One Love Beach is also known as Villingili North West Beach. It has some of the best sunsets. You can also cook at Villingili BBQ Point. The grills are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Villingili offers a unique glimpse into Maldivian life. It blends traditional culture with modern influences. Enjoy your time on this tranquil island.
