Have you ever looked out over the shimmering expanse of the Indian Ocean and dreamt of a pathway bridging the islands? The Sinamale Bridge, connecting the islands of Male, Hulhule, and Hulhumale, is no mere dream but a reality born from a shared vision of progress. The bridge, standing as the first inter-island bridge in the Maldives, is a testament to the enduring partnership between China and the Maldives. The Sinamale Bridge, also known as the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, was conceived as a symbol of this friendship and cooperation.

This project, originating from a 2007 initiative, truly took shape in 2014 and was inaugurated in 2018. The bridge was built with significant funding from China, with a grant of US$126 million and a loan of US$68 million from the Chinese government. It is this grant that helped make the bridge a reality, overcoming the challenges of complex coral reef geology, long-period deep-sea waves, and extreme conditions of high temperature, salinity, and corrosion. The construction required the use of 460 tons of 316L stainless steel plate embedded parts, and the bridge now boasts 2 lanes for four-wheeled drives, 2 lanes for motorcycles, 1 lane for bicycles, and 1 lane for pedestrians.

The Sinamale Bridge, a marvel of engineering and a symbol of international cooperation, has significantly reduced commuting time. It has forever changed the transportation landscape of the Maldives, offering a lifeline between its vibrant capital city and the international airport. The lasting impact of the bridge’s completion is undeniable. In 2020, the China Eximbank loan for the bridge was restructured under the G-20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative, demonstrating the continued commitment to supporting these vital infrastructure projects and their role in fostering economic growth. So, as you stand here, admiring the graceful sweep of the bridge, remember that you are experiencing a testament to the power of shared vision, a bridge not just across islands but across nations.
