Dare to step into a world of mystery and intrigue. This is Villa Winter, a place where history and speculation intertwine. It stands as a relic of mystery on Fuerteventura’s remote Jandía Peninsula.

Villa Winter was designed and built by Gustav Winter. He was a German engineer shrouded in enigma. The villa’s construction is said to have begun in 1937. Others claim it was built in 1946 or even 1958. The true date remains a mystery.

Gustav Winter leased a large part of the southern coastline in 1937. Soon after, he purchased the land outright. Villa Winter’s architecture is certainly curious. Its design includes thick walls and a sturdy tower. Underground spaces fuel speculation about its intended use. Was it a family holiday home? Or something more sinister?

The villa is subject to several conspiracy theories. The main theory involves Nazis and U-boats. The tower had an electric lantern similar to a lighthouse. It was purportedly used to signal German U-boats. A large fuse box is installed on the wall. The tower may have been used for communications.

Some local residents claim to have seen German personnel and U-boats nearby. They say they saw U-boats rise to the surface. Men in German army uniforms appeared.

The basement reveals long corridors with several rooms off them. The corridor has a domed ceiling. Some walls are 1.4 meters thick with reinforcement. The design resembles typical German bunkers. Some rooms are narrow. Pedro Fumero remembers seeing metal shackles on the walls. Were they cells? Were they places of torture?

The so-called kitchen is also strange. It has tiled walls and a tiled sink. A drain sits in the center of the floor. Such drains are normally in laboratories or slaughterhouses. The oven could reach 700 degrees. This heat could have been used for a crematorium or for melting metal.

There were three airstrips in the southern peninsular. One was on the beach in front of Villa Winter. Eyewitnesses remember planes landing there. Gustav Winter claimed it was to make the villa more accessible. His wife had a difficult pregnancy.

Gustav Winter had connections with the Third Reich. He received subsidies from Hermann Göring for economic plans.

The most pervasive theories involve Nazi escape routes. The Canary Islands were a key stopover point. Hidden rooms and underground spaces have been reported.

After World War II, the Allies requested Winter’s repatriation to Germany. He was suspected of being a Nazi agent. However, Spanish authorities did not hand him over.

Today, Villa Winter stands as a decaying monument. It attracts historians and conspiracy theorists. It is also for curious travelers. The villa’s allure lies in its ambiguity. It reflects the complexities of the Canary Islands during World War II. It is a place where fact, myth, and mystery intertwine.
