“Did the Socialist Party really operate from a place like this?” Villa Solférino. A name that might transport you to a sun-drenched Italian battlefield but, in reality, lands us on a street corner in Paris’s 7th arrondissement. Today, we stand before a grand hôtel particulier, once synonymous with French politics. While the name Villa Solférino itself might not appear on maps, this building at number 10, Rue de Solférino, bore the weight of that legacy. From 1981 to 2018, this grand edifice served as the headquarters of the French Socialist Party. Can you imagine the fervent discussions, the strategic plans hatched within these very walls? The decision-making that unfolded here influenced the course of France for almost four decades. Interestingly, the street’s name, and by extension the villa’s unofficial moniker, harks back to Napoleon III’s victory at the Battle of Solferino in 1859. A far cry from the political chess games played here! After the Socialists moved on, the building was briefly owned by a real estate company. It eventually found a new tenant – Interparfums, a perfume company. A surprising turn of events, wouldn’t you say? So, the next time you catch a whiff of a new French fragrance, think of Villa Solférino and the fascinating journey it has taken from a symbol of political power to the aromatic world of perfumes.
