Picture the elegant Villa Rabien before you. Its history whispers from every ornate detail. Built in 1903 by the plans of Wilhelm Rogge a Bremerhaven builder it stands as a testament to the era’s architectural flair.

This impressive villa isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a cultural treasure a symbol of Bremerhaven’s rich past. August Rabien a prominent figure in the Norddeutschen Lloyd shipping company originally owned it. This majestic home boasted ten rooms a winter garden two toilets and a bathroom. The living space covered an impressive 420 square meters. A three-story octagonal turret added to its unique charm.

Interestingly the Villa’s initial address wasn’t An der Allee. It was Malzstrasse 10. This was because the area where Villa Rabien now stands once belonged to Lehe a small town. It was developed by brewer Luder Rutenberg. He commissioned a building plan for his land in 1883. By 1900 only the Rutenbergstrasse named after him existed and only its eastern half was built-up. The Kurfürstenstrasse only appeared later.

The Villa Rabien’s style is a captivating blend. Neo-baroque features are prominent notably in the salon where an antique majolica fireplace from around 1860 sits. The building’s exterior incorporates elements of Art Nouveau and Reform style. A rounded Art Nouveau style pediment adds to its distinctive features.

Later the villa was sold to Armin Ketelsen who ran a large men’s clothing store in Wesermünde-Lehe. It later served as a multi-generational community center until 2019. It’s current appearance is thanks to owner Marika Büssing who in 2010 was awarded the Bremer Denkmalpflegepreis for its historically sensitive restoration. This accolade highlights the meticulous effort dedicated to preserving this Bremerhaven gem.

Since 1979 Villa Rabien enjoys protected status as a Bremer monument. It’s a living piece of history a remarkable example of architectural preservation. This is more than a house it’s a story waiting to be discovered. A place where past and present beautifully intertwine.
