Have you ever heard of the remarkable Villa Marie Auguste in Colombes? It stands proudly a testament to a life less ordinary. Its very name hints at a story of elegance and perhaps a touch of mystery.

This isn’t just any Parisian villa. Villa Marie Auguste holds a unique place in the history of art and mental health. While the villa itself may not have been the site of groundbreaking artistic exhibitions, its story is intertwined with that of Dr Auguste Marie. A leading clinical psychiatrist Dr Marie was a visionary collector. He amassed a collection of art created by patients in psychiatric institutions. His collection known as the Auguste Marie Collection played a major role in shaping how we see art created by individuals struggling with mental illness.

Imagine the hushed corridors of Villejuif psychiatric hospital in the early 1900s. It was there that Dr Marie established his Museum of Madness. Not a traditional museum mind you but a space within the hospital itself. He displayed the extraordinary art of his patients. The term Museum of Madness was somewhat misleading. His aim was to raise awareness to garner support for the founding of a proper science museum. It was dedicated to psychiatric history. Yet even this modest display had a significant impact.

Several medical interns saw his collection. This inspired them to publish monographs. They highlighted the extraordinary visual productions of psychiatric patients. Paul Meunier’s L’art chez les fous and Jean Vinchon’s L’art et la folie are two examples. Both are beautifully illustrated with works from Dr Marie’s collection. Patients like Albert G and Maurice N under the pseudonyms Baron de Ravallet and Xavier Cotton are prominently featured.

The late 1920s marked a turning point. Dr Marie sought to bring his collection to a wider public. He organized exhibitions at prestigious Parisian galleries like Galerie Vavin and Galerie Max Bine. These exhibitions attracted considerable attention. Surrealists such as Paul Eluard and Max Ernst acquired works. Czech painter Ladislas Szési even brokered loans from the collection to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The works were showcased in the Fantastic Art Dada Surrealism exhibition.

The core of the Auguste Marie Collection eventually found its home in Jean Dubuffet’s Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne Switzerland. This collection continues to inspire awe and reflection.

So here we stand before Villa Marie Auguste. A building that while modest in itself speaks volumes about its connection to a significant collection. Dr Marie’s legacy continues to resonate. It reminds us of the power of art and the importance of understanding mental illness. Remember the name Villa Marie Auguste. It represents a story of art resilience and the enduring human spirit.
