Villa Jägerberg

1895. The year Villa Jägerberg became part of something bigger. It became a residence within the Bilz Sanatorium, a haven for those seeking natural healing. Eduard Bilz himself, the man behind the sanatorium, chose Villa Jägerberg as his private residence. The villa stands as a testament to his vision. It is an architectural gem nestled within the historic vineyard landscape of Radebeul, also within the protected Lößnitz area. Villa Jägerberg isn’t just a building. It’s a “unique country estate” recognized for its architectural, artistic, and landscaping significance. The buildings themselves are listed as individual monuments. The grounds are a recognized work of landscape and garden design. By 1973 at the latest, this former winery earned its place as an architectural monument. The villa boasts a “castle-like” main building. Its grounds include wooded areas, a terraced (now overgrown) park, and various paths. There’s also a vineyard, an artificial ruin, and a bastion with a viewing tower (now also a ruin). Numerous outbuildings and sculptures dot the landscape. A Bruchstein wall encloses the property along Augustusweg, punctuated by a gate with a magnificent wrought-iron grille. The villa has seen many changes. It’s sometimes called the Bilz-Villa after one of its owners. The main section faces Augustusweg, separated by a large garden. The building, with its slated saddle roof, stands three stories tall thanks to the Ziller brothers’ addition in 1872. On the north side, a three-story annex with a saddle roof forms an L-shape with the main villa. The gables are stepped or finial-like. The annex features pointed arch blind arches. A polygonal three-story tower with a helm stands before the left side. The two original lower floors are plastered. The top floor presents itself as a loggia with a wooden railing. A central projection bears a heightened gable with finials. A balcony with tracery balustrade adorns the level of the wooden railings. An oriel stands before the ground floor of this projection. Some window frames, made of sandstone, display Gothic influences. The Jägerberg estate whispers tales of a rich past. From its 16th-century origins as a vineyard, to its time as a sanatorium, to its modern-day restoration. Villa Jägerberg has witnessed centuries of history unfold within its walls and across its grounds.
