Built in 1849, Villa Ichon stands proudly before you. It has witnessed Bremen’s evolution. Originally designed in a simple classical style by Heinrich Depken, Villa Ichon has been home to insurance salesmen, democrats, and even theater directors. The building has undergone several transformations. In 1871, architect Johann Georg Poppe, a later owner of the villa, redesigned it in the Neo-Renaissance style. He added a tower, a two-story bay window, and lavish interior decorations. Poppe’s touch shaped much of what you see today. Villa Ichon played a vital role in Bremen’s theater scene. Johannes Wiegand, director of the Stadttheater, resided here from 1925 to 1940. This theater was the precursor to the Theater am Goetheplatz, which is now right next door. Later, the villa housed the law firm of Dr. Theodor Ichon, son of another theater director, Eduard Ichon, who also once called this villa home. In the 1960s, Villa Ichon faced demolition. The Ariadne Grundstücksverwertungs Gesellschaft envisioned a modern apartment building in its place. The city intervened in 1968, acquiring the building to protect the possibility of expanding the theater. The villa narrowly escaped destruction again in 1973. Its inclusion in the Bremen monument list halted the demolition plans. Bremen’s own Klaus Hübotter, a building contractor and patron of the arts, stepped in. He personally appealed to the mayor and spearheaded the villa’s restoration. Financial constraints prolonged the process until 1981, when federal funding secured its completion. The dedicated Initiativgruppe zur Erhaltung der Villa Ichon (Initiative Group for the Preservation of Villa Ichon) even received the German Prize for Monument Protection in 1984. Today, Villa Ichon thrives as a hub for culture and peace activism. The Verein der Freunde und Förderer der Villa Ichon (Association of Friends and Supporters of Villa Ichon) manages the building. They also award the annual Villa Ichon Culture and Peace Prize, a prestigious honor with a 5,000 euro award. The Villa Ichon stands as a testament to Bremen’s commitment to preserving its heritage, fostering the arts, and promoting peace.
