Unveiling itself before you is the Villa Hennebique. It is not just a building. It is a statement etched in concrete. This villa stands as a testament to the innovative mind of François Hennebique. He was a pioneer in reinforced concrete construction.

This is Villa Hennebique. Constructed between 1901 and 1903, the Villa Hennebique served as the family home of François Hennebique. More importantly, it showcased the possibilities of reinforced concrete.

François Hennebique was born in 1842. He became a mason after his studies. By 23, he was leading the reconstruction of a church destroyed by fire. Later, he moved to Belgium and became an entrepreneur. He experimented with iron and concrete. He sought to protect metal from fire.

In 1879, Hennebique first used this process to build a private residence in Belgium. He saw the material’s potential. In 1892, he patented a system of reinforced concrete beams. This balanced the stress between concrete and metal framework. The stirrup beam was born.

Hennebique dedicated himself to promoting this material. In 1898, he launched the magazine Le Béton Armé. It was published for nearly 40 years. In 1900, he built the first neo-Haussmann building in Paris using reinforced concrete. His company’s slogan was “No more disastrous fires.”

The Villa Hennebique itself is a marvel. It combines various construction systems developed by Hennebique’s company. The complex design features projecting wings and varying levels. It has cantilevered projections and high glass roofs. The design seamlessly integrates the garden.

The tower includes a water reservoir. It irrigates a rooftop garden. In 1898, François Hennebique strategically bought the land near the railway line. The 40-meter tower would impress potential clients arriving at the Bourg-la-Reine station.

The Villa Hennebique embodies Hennebique’s motto: flowers light and ventilation. Suspended gardens and large windows harmonize with the surroundings. It demonstrated the possibilities of his invention. Hennebique went on to build over 1200 reinforced concrete structures globally. These include buildings in Paris and the Risorgimento Bridge in Rome.

François Hennebique died in 1921. He rests in a concrete-encased grave in Bourg-la-Reine cemetery. The Villa Hennebique remains a symbol of his architectural revolution. It stands as a classified historical monument since 2012. It marked the beginning of modern architecture.
