Gazing upon Villa Fritze, one might hear whispers of Bremen’s opulent past. Villa Fritze stands as a testament to the city’s rich history. It offers a glimpse into the lives of Bremen’s elite. The villa’s story begins long before its current structure graced the Weserstrasse. In 1827, a modest, single-story classical country house stood on this very spot. It served as the summer residence of Carl Wilhelm August Fritze, a prominent Bremen merchant and senator. The original house was surrounded by a sprawling park, acquired in 1834 from Dr. Albrecht Wilhelm Roth, a renowned physician and botanist. This park forms the heart of what is now Vegesack’s beloved Stadtgarten. The current Villa Fritze, however, emerged in 1876. It was a grand two-story, eight-axis, clinker brick structure, designed by Heinrich Müller. The villa boasts two wings facing the Weser River, a hipped roof, and a prominent three-axis portico. A terrace sits above the portico. Verandas and loggias complete the villa’s elegant design. The opulence of Villa Fritze reflects the French Renaissance and Baroque influences popular during the era of Historicism. The villa’s construction was commissioned by Gottfried Johannes Carl Fritze, son of the original owner. Villa Fritze, the most elaborate villa in Vegesack, became a symbol of the wealth and status enjoyed by prominent families in Bremen. The ensemble also included a two-story plastered tea house with a three-story turret, built in 1879/80 right on the edge of the high bank. A carriage house, a two-story clinker-brick structure, completed the estate. This carriage house is now home to Bremen-Vegesack’s volunteer fire department. In 1938, Villa Fritze became city property. It housed various municipal offices, including the Vegesack district office and the Bremen-Nord registry office. In 2012, the building was sold to a real estate company. It was converted into eight residential apartments. Interestingly, two white sandstone figures of Zeus and Heracles once adorned the villa. Today, they reside in the Stadtgarten. While Villa Fritze has undergone transformations over the years, its historical significance and cultural importance remain. It stands as a reminder of Bremen’s grand past.
