Doesn’t the name, Villa de la Garenne, conjure images of a serene retreat? It is a place where history and art intertwine. Here at Villa de la Garenne, we are surrounded by the echoes of the past.

Villa de la Garenne itself is a country house from the 18th century. Gardens embrace it. This is a place where time seems to slow. In 1770, Joseph Marquis de Mesmes leased this house. He leased it to Jean-Jacques Garnier. Garnier was an inspector at the Royal College of France. He implemented many reforms there. At the time, the Villa de la Garenne only had a ground floor and a first floor.

Let’s jump forward a century. In 1873-1874, Mrs. Halgan’s widow rented the house. The Viardot family and Ivan Tourguéniev became residents. Imagine the conversations that must have taken place within these walls.

The Villa de la Garenne changed hands several times. Then, in 1918, Georgette Wallace acquired the property. She was an opera singer known as Lucy Arbell. She was also the granddaughter of Sir Richard Wallace. He was a philanthropist and benefactor. Lucy Arbell divided her life between music and charity. Upon her death in 1947, she donated the Villa de la Garenne to the Arts Orphanage. What a generous act.

The Villa de la Garenne stands as a testament to art and generosity. Take a moment to appreciate its history. Think of the people who lived and breathed within these walls. Their stories echo in the gardens and rooms of Villa de la Garenne.
