Envision a majestic neo-Gothic villa. This is Villa Cahn in Bonn. It stands proudly overlooking the Rhine. This remarkable building was a testament to Albert Cahn’s vision. Cahn a Jewish banker from Frankfurt commissioned its construction between 1868 and 1870. He envisioned Villa Cahn as the family’s ancestral home. The Hannoverian architect Edwin Oppler designed this castle-like structure.

Inside Villa Cahn Cahn amassed a priceless art collection. It featured exquisite Dutch and early German paintings. He also collected ceramics weapons and stained glass. The furniture was custom-made. Some pieces were copies of antique designs. The villa was a true Gesamtkunstwerk a total work of art.

Tragedy struck during the Third Reich. Cahn’s family fled Germany due to their Jewish heritage and opposition to Nazism. Parts of the art collection were sold to fund their escape. The remaining pieces were taken with them. They were later sold as well. The Nazi regime desecrated Cahn’s grave. Fragments of his headstone now rest in a Frankfurt Jewish cemetery.

After World War II the villa was returned to the family. However it was largely plundered and only partially inhabited. The family eventually sold it. There were even plans to move the villa to the USA. These proved unrealistic. From 1979 it stood empty. It slowly fell into disrepair. Inside much was lost to theft and vandalism. An ill-conceived renovation in the 1980s caused further damage. Wall paintings were destroyed. Most of the interior fittings were removed.

Frank Asbeck purchased the ten thousand square meter property in 1997. He meticulously restored the villa. He rescued it from further decay. Windows ceiling paintings wood carvings and fixtures were repaired or reconstructed. The heating and plumbing were entirely replaced. The old heating system consisted of open fireplaces. Warm air was distributed to distant rooms via air shafts. A wellness and spa area with a whirlpool was created in the complex cellar. Today Villa Cahn is screened from the public. It sits within a fully enclosed property. Its splendor is now mostly hidden from view.
