Borgward, a man who started by designing a tiny three-wheeled delivery van called the Blitzkarren, rose to lead one of Germany’s largest automobile manufacturers. Borgward’s own brand, known for the popular Isabella model, represented luxury and innovation. Goliath, his experimental line, was one of the first to embrace fuel injection. And then there was Lloyd, the brand that went from being mocked as “the car for those who do not fear death” to a symbol of working-class mobility with the Lloyd Alexander.
