Imagine stepping into a Parisian time machine. Villa Blanchard isn’t just a name it’s a portal. It whispers of Antoine Blanchard a painter who captured the Belle Epoque. His canvases overflow with the romance of old Paris. Think horse-drawn carriages stylish ladies and gentlemen strolling along boulevards. This is the Paris of his art. This is the Paris he loved.

Antoine Blanchard wasn’t born Antoine Blanchard. He began life as Marcel Masson. The son of a furniture maker he showed artistic talent early on. His parents sent him to art schools. He even won a prestigious award. He served in the French Army during World War II. Life changed after the war. Marcel moved to Paris. He chose a new name. Antoine Blanchard became his artistic identity. He transformed into a painter of la ville des lumieres the city of light.

Blanchard initially copied the style of Edouard Cortes. He admired Cortes’ Belle Epoque paintings. However he soon developed his own unique style. His paintings became brighter. His brushstrokes were lighter almost like calligraphy. He used soft pastel tones. He captured perspective with amazing skill. His work has a decorative quality a touch of Impressionism.

Blanchard loved the historical past of Paris. He collected sepia postcards. These cards showed Paris at its most peaceful and beautiful. His work depicts the city before World War I. He painted the Loire Valley chateaus Notre Dame Cathedral Place Concorde the Opera and the Arc de Triomphe. He immortalized many of Paris’ boulevards. His paintings are like walking through old Paris. You see horse-drawn carriages fashionable people enjoying sidewalk cafes. His canvases show Paris in all its seasons.

Blanchard was modest. He wasn’t interested in fame. He preferred working in his studio. His life was dedicated to his art. He painted until his death in 1988. Hundreds of his paintings survive. They allow us to stroll through the streets of a bygone Paris. We can almost feel the beauty and romance he captured on canvas. Villa Blanchard stands as a testament to a life dedicated to art and the beauty of the Parisian past. Here today we remember the painter who gave us a glimpse into the heart of Paris.
