Overlooking the scenic promenade of Pozzuoli stands Villa Avellino – de Gemmis. This elegant villa has witnessed centuries of history. Villa Avellino – de Gemmis was built in 1540. Its first owners were the prestigious Colonna family, specifically the Princes of Stigliano. The villa remained in their possession for a significant period, eventually being sold to the Benedictine fathers of the Congregation of Montevergine in 1797. However, their ownership was short-lived. The Benedictine Order was suppressed in 1807, leading to another change in ownership for Villa Avellino – de Gemmis. This time, it passed into the hands of the Dukes of Lusciano. In 1836, the villa found its namesake when it was purchased by the archaeologist Francesco Maria Avellino. Interestingly, beneath the grandeur of Villa Avellino – de Gemmis lies a fascinating vestige of Roman times. A Roman cistern, still referred to as the “Lusciano pool”, is incorporated into the villa’s foundations. This hidden gem serves as a reminder of the ancient history that layers this beautiful region.
