Could a place named “twenty cents” hold a story worth millions? Here in Vila Vintém, the tale is far richer than its name might suggest. Vila Vintém, nestled between Realengo and Padre Miguel in Rio de Janeiro’s West Zone, whispers a story of resilience, samba, and the ever-present rhythm of the railroad. Vila Vintém wasn’t always a bustling community. The land once belonged to the army. Early residents, seeking a place to call home, built simple stucco and sapê houses with the army’s permission. Imagine a Vila Vintém without electricity or sewage. They relied on candles, torches, and makeshift drains. “Collective water pipes” were the main source of water, where residents would gather with their tins. The arrival of the Moça Bonita railway station in 1939 marked a turning point for Vila Vintém. Railway workers, seeking affordable housing, began to populate the area. More residents arrived, drawn by the construction of apartments on Marechal Falcão da Frota Street. Vila Vintém grew. Small businesses emerged, like grocery stores and a coal pit. The residents’ association brought electricity, distributing it throughout the community. Basic sanitation arrived later, during Carlos Lacerda’s government. In the 1950s, the Moça Bonita station was renamed “Padre Miguel” to honor a local priest. This also gave the surrounding neighborhood its name. Vila Vintém is also the heart of samba, housing the headquarters of Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel and Unidos de Padre Miguel, two renowned samba schools. Many of their members call Vila Vintém home. The main street, Rua Belisário de Souza, stretches from the IAPI housing complex in Padre Miguel to Realengo, pulsing with the life and energy of Vila Vintém. While Vila Vintém’s story is one of community and samba, it also carries the weight of social challenges and the complexities of its past.
