“Buddha Sasana” means learning the Buddha’s teachings. Here at Vihara Sasana Diva.

Vihara Theravada Buddha Sasana began with Buddhist students. They had difficulty praying in the 1980s. Parents discussed this with Surya Widya. After eighteen meetings, they agreed to build a Vihara in Kelapa Gading. A committee was formed and bought land.

The community grew. The Yayasan Buddha Sasana collected funds. They built a new Vihara on Jalan Kelapa Nias Timur.

Vihara Theravada Buddha Sasana was founded in the 80s. Local Buddhists in Kelapa Gading established it. The temple has grown. It now houses monks from the Sangha Theravada Indonesia. The temple is heavily influenced by Javanese architecture. Rituals follow the Theravada tradition. Most temple-goers are local Chinese from Kelapa Gading. Some Javanese Buddhists from Central Java live here too. They care for the building and the monks.

The Vihara’s name was suggested by Surya Widya. It means learning the teachings of the Buddha.
