Amidst Jakarta’s vibrant tapestry of cultures sits Vihara Sasana Buddha. It’s a beacon of Theravada Buddhism in the Kelapa Gading district. Vihara Sasana Buddha’s story began in the late 1980s. Buddhist students faced challenges finding a place to worship. Their parents, along with Surya Widya, held 18 meetings. Sixteen meetings took place at Dr. R. Surya W’s home. Two meetings were held at Tunas Karya High School. These meetings led to the formation of a committee. This committee, which later became the Buddha Sasana Foundation, had five members. Their mission was to establish a Vihara in Kelapa Gading. They purchased land on Pelepah Kuning Raya WX 1/1 for this purpose. As the Buddhist community grew, the foundation raised funds. They constructed a new Vihara at Jalan Kelapa Nias Timur Blok PE 2 No. 17. The name “Buddha Sasana,” suggested by Surya Widya, means “learning the teachings of the Buddha.” Vihara Sasana Buddha stands as a testament to community and the pursuit of spiritual growth.
