Engulfed in flames, yet rising from the ashes, Vihara Dharma Bhakti stands as a symbol of resilience. This temple, also known as Kim Tek Ie, has witnessed centuries of history unfold within Jakarta’s vibrant Chinatown. Established in 1650 by Lieutenant der Chinezen Kwee Hoen, Vihara Dharma Bhakti originally bore the name Kwan Im Teng, meaning “Pavilion of Guanyin”. It served as a sanctuary dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy. This temple’s significance is etched into the very word “klenteng,” a term derived from “Kwan Im Teng” that now broadly refers to Chinese temples in Indonesia. Vihara Dharma Bhakti holds the distinction of being the oldest Chinese temple in Jakarta. Its story, however, is not without its trials. In 1740, the temple was tragically consumed by fire during a massacre targeting the Chinese community. The spirit of Vihara Dharma Bhakti, much like the phoenix, emerged from the ashes. Restored in 1755 under the leadership of Kapitein der Chinezen Oey Tji Lo, the temple was given a new name, Kim Tek Ie. Today, we know it as Vihara Dharma Bhakti, a name adopted in 1965 as part of a national initiative to promote Indonesian names. Vihara Dharma Bhakti is more than just a place of worship. It is a cultural hub, a stage for vibrant festivals, especially the Zhong Yuan Festival and the Lantern Festival. Imagine the temple courtyard bustling with activity, the air thick with the scent of incense and the sounds of celebration. This sacred space has borne witness to not only joyous festivities, but also tragedy. The 2015 fire, ignited by a simple tarpaulin near candles, serves as a stark reminder of the temple’s vulnerability. Despite the damage, the spirit of Vihara Dharma Bhakti perseveres. Its ornate roof and historic sculptures may have been touched by flame, but its essence remains unbroken. As you stand before Vihara Dharma Bhakti today, you stand before a testament to endurance. It is a place where history and spirituality intertwine, whispering stories of resilience and rebirth.
