Before us stands Vihara Cua Niu Niu also known as Jin De Yuan temple. It is a testament to Jakarta’s diverse cultural heritage. This is the oldest and grandest Chinese temple in Jakarta. Over 3000 square meters this Buddhist sanctuary has Taoist elements dating back to the mid-17th century.
Vihara Cua Niu Niu is more than just a temple. It is a living museum of Chinese-Indonesian history and culture. The temple is also known as Vihara Dharma Bhakti.
Look closely at the roof. Notice the two nagas. These are mythical Hindu dragons. Also observe the unicorn creatures in the windows. These are Hindu symbols of prosperity and protection. The Jin de Yuan temple has fascinating animal creatures you wouldn’t find in any other Chinese temple.
Inside Vihara Cua Niu Niu you will discover a space dedicated to Guan Yin. She is the female goddess of mercy. According to legend Guan Yin refused to marry someone she did not love. Against her father’s wishes she became a Buddhist nun.
Imagine coming here during Imlek Chinese New Year. This temple is the busiest place in Jakarta at that time. Chinese people from all over come here to pray. They exchange gifts and celebrate. The mother of all Chinese temples in Java becomes a vibrant hub.
Take note of the giant candles at the entrance. They can burn for up to six months. Some weigh up to 300 kilos. These candles are locally made in North Jakarta. Red candles are for celebrations and festivals. White candles are for funerals.
In 1650 Chinese lieutenant Kwee Hoen built this temple. He named it Koan Im Teng in honor of goddess Kwan Im. The Taoist temple was burnt down during the 1740 massacre. It was rebuilt in 1755 by Chinese captain Oei Tjhie.
Before praying at the shrines inside first pray to the sky. Here resides Thi Kong the highest creator. The gods inside are representatives of the holiest creator. On the days of new moon and full moon the temple is filled with those seeking God’s protection and prosperity.
