Can you sense it? The quiet hum of devotion that permeates the air around Vihara Buddha Sasana? This vibrant temple, nestled in the heart of Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of a community. Vihara Theravada Buddha Sasana, often called VTBS, emerged in the 1980s. It was born from a simple need. A group of Buddhist students found themselves without a place to practice their faith. Their parents, led by a figure named Surya Widya, embarked on a journey of dedication. They held eighteen meetings, sixteen in Dr. R. Surya W’s home and two at the Tunas Karya High School. Their goal was to create a spiritual home for their children. From these humble beginnings, Vihara Buddha Sasana blossomed. The original temple, located on Pelepah Kuning Raya, couldn’t contain the growing congregation. The community rallied, raising funds to build a larger, more vibrant temple at its current location on Jalan Kelapa Nias Timur. The name “Buddha Sasana,” suggested by Surya Widya, reflects the temple’s essence. It means “learning the teachings of the Buddha.” Vihara Buddha Sasana stands as a beacon of Javanese-inspired architecture. The monks who reside here, part of the Sangha Theravada Indonesia, carry the torch of the Theravada tradition. The community that gathers at Vihara Buddha Sasana is a tapestry of cultures. Predominantly, it comprises the local Chinese community of Kelapa Gading. Interestingly, it also includes Javanese Buddhists from Central Java, specifically Jepara and Pati. These individuals play a vital role, serving as caretakers of the temple and supporting the monastic community. Vihara Buddha Sasana offers more than just a place to pray. It is a hub of learning, a center of community and a testament to the power of shared aspirations. As you stand here, absorb the peaceful atmosphere. Consider the dedication that brought Vihara Buddha Sasana to life. It’s a story of faith, perseverance and the enduring human need for connection.
