The municipality quickly developed into residential areas. First, the Castors built houses. Later, HLM offices added buildings in the second half of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 21st century, Vigneux-sur-Seine is mainly residential. It is now seeking urban renewal.

Vigneux-sur-Seine is on the old Seine riverbed. Humans occupied it since the Neolithic period. The area was first dependent on Parisian churches. Later, rich landowners controlled it. From the 14th century castles appeared. Vigneux-sur-Seine changed when sand quarries opened. This led to a port and the railway in 1863.

Vigneux-sur-Seine’s name has evolved. In the 6th century it was Vicus Novus. By 1232 it was Vinolium. Vicus Novus means new village. The name Vigneux appeared in 1793. The addition “sur-Seine” occurred in 1910.

The commune’s geography also plays a crucial role. Vigneux-sur-Seine sits where the Seine loops northeast. The river borders four kilometers of banks. Several ponds and lakes dot the area. These include the Château ponds in the Port-aux-Cerises leisure island. There are also the Pierre à Mousseau ponds. You can also find Lake Fraye Castle. Montalbot Lake is also in the area. It was once a sand pit.

The territory rises gently from the Seine to the Sénart plateau. The maximum altitude reaches 84 meters in the Sénart forest. The lowest point is 31 meters on the riverbank. The town hall sits at 41 meters.
