Contemplate for a moment the power of words. Here stands the Viggo Hørup Statue a tribute to a man who wielded words like weapons. Viggo Hørup was no ordinary man. He was a left-wing politician and journalist who shook Denmark with his views.

This bronze sculpture in the King’s Garden at Rosenborg Castle commemorates him. The Viggo Hørup Statue was designed by Jens Ferdinand Willumsen in 1908. The statue captures Hørup as the public saw him. He is depicted as an agitator fighting for the liberation of farmers. He championed the victory of popular government. Hørup’s words stirred a storm across the country. Willumsen portrayed him with great power, determination, and authority. This was unlike the modest, slender man Hørup truly was.

Interestingly Willumsen never met Hørup. He crafted the figure using photographs and accounts from Hørup’s close circle. Willumsen also read Hørup’s articles and speeches. Thus the statue isn’t an exact likeness. The Viggo Hørup Statue is unique among Willumsen’s sculptures. It is the only one that can truly be called fully sculptured.

The statue was erected six years after Viggo Hørup’s death. Hørup served as Minister of Public Works. He was born in 1841 and died in 1902.

Take a closer look. Feel the energy radiating from the bronze. The Viggo Hørup Statue stands as a reminder. Words can shape society. They can challenge the status quo.
