Can you feel the gentle awakening? Here, at the Vier Jahreszeiten Frühling Sculpture, we witness rebirth. The Vier Jahreszeiten Frühling Sculpture is part of a larger ensemble, the “Vier Jahreszeiten” or “Four Seasons,” nestled within Bremen’s Bürgerpark near the Park Hotel. This bronze sculpture, along with its companions Summer, Autumn, and Winter, was unveiled in 1991. It marked the 125th anniversary of the park, originally designed by Wilhelm Benque. The sculptor, Bernd Altenstein, breathed life into these allegorical figures. Each sculpture stands approximately 2.2 meters high, 1.6 meters wide, and 1.6 meters deep. They rise from stone pedestals, their bronze surfaces reflecting the changing light. Frühling, or Spring, depicts a scene of burgeoning life. A loving couple embodies the renewal of the season, while a wise old man and a budding tree symbolize growth and wisdom. The figures stand on the banks of the Hollersee, their reflections shimmering in the water. In the background, the modern architecture of the Park Hotel creates a striking contrast. The hotel’s various wings, built between 1954 and 2004, stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time, a counterpoint to the timeless themes of the sculptures. Altenstein, a prolific sculptor, has left his mark throughout Bremen. His works, from “Das Ende” in the Wallanlagen to “Fietje Balge” near the Marktplatz, capture the spirit of the city and its people.
