Wow What a sight The Victorian Apartments stand before us. A testament to Seattle’s vibrant past.

This magnificent building at 1234-1238 South King Street is more than just apartments. It’s a living piece of history. Constructed in 1891 it initially provided homes for families near Pioneer Square. Imagine Seattle then a booming city its population exploding from 10000 to 42000 in just a few years.

The Victorian Apartments weren’t always here. In 1908 a massive regrading project reshaped the city. Many buildings were demolished. But these apartments survived. They were carefully moved to avoid demolition. They earned their name not for their initial design but for their unique survival and unusual style for the time. In 1979 it was designated a Seattle Landmark. Then in 1990 it became Seattle’s only unaltered pre-1900 structure of its kind earning a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

Its architecture is understated elegance. A modest Late Victorian style. The west facade however shines. Six square two-story windows and three porches give it character. Fish scale shinglework tops the gables. Spindlework friezes and turned posts add a touch of ornate beauty.

By the 1980s the Victorian Apartments had fallen into disrepair. Historic Seattle stepped in. With the help of federal tax credits they restored the building. They created fourteen units of affordable housing. Today the apartments stand as a symbol of preservation and community effort. The building is a reminder of Seattle’s resilience its commitment to preserving its heritage for future generations. It is a true architectural gem a window into the city’s past thriving in the heart of modern Seattle.
