You see, Building M wasn’t always a bustling hub for higher education. It was once part of the Footscray Technical School, a place established in 1916 to empower locals with practical skills. In those days, the building housed workshops where students learned vital trades like carpentry, metalworking, and engineering. The school’s early years were marked by an unwavering commitment to providing access to education no matter the background. They offered evening classes, even allowing girls to join as students in 1936. The school, later transformed into Footscray Institute of Technology (FIT), was a place of firsts – the first female day students enrolled in 1960, and the first Bachelor-level graduates in 1974. Over the years, it grew and evolved, ultimately merging with the Western Institute to become the Victoria University of Technology in 1992. Today, as you stand here, you are looking at a building that has witnessed over a century of dedication to education.
