Ever wondered about the oldest operational theatre in San Francisco? That’s the Victoria Theatre, right here on 16th Street. This building has a rich history. It has reinvented itself multiple times to stay relevant to the changing times.

The Victoria Theatre began its life in 1908. It was first known as Brown’s Opera House. Edmund Joseph Brown, grandfather of Governor Jerry Brown, owned it. It showcased vaudeville acts and motion pictures.

Vaudeville’s popularity waned after a few decades. Brown’s Opera House transformed itself. During the Depression in the 1930s, it became the 16th Street Theater. It offered second-run movies at a nickel. The theater even gave away Depression glassware. This attracted patrons during those tough times.

In the 1950s, another change occurred. It was renamed El Teatro Victoria. The theater then screened Spanish-language movies.

The 1960s brought further transformation. Many movie houses were closing or becoming chain stores. The Victoria Theatre embraced a new identity. It became the Follies Burlesque. As a burlesque house, it hosted famous performers. Blaze Starr, Tempest Storm, and Virginia “Ding Dong” Bell graced its stage. It continued until 1970. The theater then closed for renovations.

In 1972, it reopened as the Victoria Theatre. It is the oldest operating theatre in San Francisco today. Throughout its history, many famous performers have appeared here. Mae West, Whoopi Goldberg, Bill Irwin, and Donald O’Connor have all performed here.

Whoopi Goldberg rose to national prominence here. She performed her one-woman show “Mabley, Moms” at the Victoria Theatre.

The Victoria Theatre can seat 480 people. It offers a diverse range of performances. These include original plays, concerts, and film festivals. It also hosts musicals and international performing companies. The theater has video and 35mm film capabilities. It also features Dolby Pro Logic Surround Sound.

The Victoria Theatre continues to host diverse events. The Frameline San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival has been held here. The theater also showcases new documentary films. Ray of Light Theatre has staged live performances here too.

The Victoria Theatre stands as a testament to San Francisco’s ever-changing cultural landscape. It has survived and thrived by adapting to the times. Its eclectic and edgy presentations continue to entertain audiences today. As you leave, remember the many faces and stories that have graced this stage. The Victoria Theatre is more than just a building. It’s a living piece of San Francisco history.
