Thirty thousand police officers. That’s how many have trained here at the Victoria Police Academy. Think about that for a moment. Before you stands the very place where generations of Victorian police officers began their careers.

The Victoria Police Academy isn’t just a building. It’s a legacy. It’s a vital part of Melbourne’s history. Opened in 1973 it occupies the former grounds of Corpus Christi College a Roman Catholic seminary. The seminary itself was only partially built between 1954 and 1959. The Academy uses many of the original buildings. The former seminary rooms are now offices. The kitchen and dining hall still serve recruits today.

The Academy isn’t static. It’s evolved. New buildings were added in the 1980s. A mock village was created for realistic training scenarios. A significant upgrade in 2013-14 added a state-of-the-art training complex. This included a new firing range and a ‘Hydra’ system. Hydra simulates various scenarios from vehicle pursuits to major crime investigations. The upgrades also expanded capacity to train an additional 1700 police and 940 protective services officers.

But the story doesn’t end there. The Academy is also home to the impressive Corpus Christi Chapel. Now an interfaith chapel it was originally built as a Basilica. It has fourteen side altars and seats 500 people. The chapel features stunning stained-glass windows and a memorial for officers killed in the line of duty. The chapel’s cross. It’s made of Queensland maple and weighs a considerable 88 kilograms.

More than just training. The Academy has a rich and evolving history. It’s a symbol of dedication and service. It’s a place where lives are shaped. It’s a place where history is made. Every brick here whispers stories of bravery and commitment. It’s a place where every police officer in Victoria has spent time. From graduations to funerals the Academy is where they come together. A true testament to the Victoria Police force and its dedication to protecting the community.
