Forty-seven thousand souls once packed into Victoria Park. Can you imagine that roar? Victoria Park in Abbotsford Melbourne wasn’t just a park. It was the heart of Collingwood. For over a century it pulsed with the passion of the Magpies. From its humble beginnings as Dight’s Paddock in 1879 Victoria Park transformed. It wasn’t always a football ground. Initially a twelve-hectare expanse it hosted cattle. Later a cricket pitch and cycling track appeared. This land gifted to Collingwood’s citizens became much more.

In 1892 Collingwood Football Club played its first game here. Sixteen thousand spectators witnessed the event. The club’s incredible popularity soared. Victoria Park became legendary. Its stands grew. The Ryder Stand built by sustenance workers during the Great Depression stands as a testament to resilience. It offered hope to a community struggling with poverty and unemployment. Victories at Victoria Park were more than just games. They were escapes from hardship.

The park held the record for the largest crowd in 1948. Forty-seven thousand people saw Collingwood defeat South Melbourne. From 1959 to the late 1980s Victoria Park was a suburban giant. It was the third largest stadium after the MCG and Princes Park. However the AFL’s ground consolidation policy forced change. In 1999 Collingwood played its last AFL game here. This wasn’t the end though.

The club returned. Victoria Park hosted AFL Women’s and VFL Women’s matches. It became a place of community recreation. A seven point two million dollar upgrade in 2010 transformed the park. Two plazas appeared. Stands were refurbished. A walking path now circles the oval. In 2020 a further two million dollars improved facilities for the women’s teams.

Victoria Park isn’t just about sporting history. It’s a story of community perseverance. It’s a reminder of the powerful bond between a club and its supporters. It’s a place where the echoes of forty-seven thousand cheers still linger. It’s a place of heritage significance. It’s a place where history and community meet. It is Victoria Park a living legacy in the heart of Melbourne.
