Did you ever hear the story of Victoria Manalo Draves? Here at the Victoria Manalo Draves Plaque, her story unfolds. This plaque commemorates an incredible athlete and a true pioneer. Victoria Manalo Draves was a Filipina American diver who defied expectations and broke barriers. Her story began in the South of Market area of San Francisco, where she grew up. She attended Bessie Carmichael School, right next to this very park. The neighborhood was a melting pot of cultures, but even here, her mixed heritage, with a Filipino father and English mother, made her a target of prejudice. She discovered her love for swimming at the Mission’s Nickel Baths and later learned to dive at Fleishacker Pool.

Victoria Manalo Draves possessed a natural talent, but her path to Olympic glory was not easy. She faced discrimination when she tried to join the Fairmont Hotel Swimming and Diving Club. Because of her Filipino heritage, the club initially refused her entry. Her coach, Phil Patterson, had to convince her parents to let her use her mother’s maiden name, Taylor, just to train there. She trained under an assumed name, hiding a part of herself to pursue her dream. This resilience and determination shaped her into the champion she would become. The war interrupted her training. After graduating high school, she resumed her training and began entering competitions. At the 1948 London Olympics, Victoria stood on the platform, the weight of expectations on her shoulders. She remembered thinking, “I can’t do this.” But with the encouragement of fellow diver Sammy Lee, she pushed through her fear.

She executed a flawless back 1-1/2 twist, a dive that secured her the gold medal. She wasn’t just Mrs. Draves, she was Victoria Manalo Draves, a proud Filipina American. This was a monumental moment. She became the first Asian American woman to win Olympic gold and the first woman to win gold in both the three-meter springboard and the ten-meter platform diving events. Victoria Manalo Draves died in 2010 at the age of 85. Her legacy lives on, not just in the record books, but here at Victoria Manalo Draves Park, and through this plaque. She reminds us that perseverance can overcome prejudice and that dreams are worth fighting for. Take a moment to reflect on her incredible story here at the Victoria Manalo Draves Plaque. Her story is a testament to the power of the human spirit.
